Being a town at the political, if not physical, center of Pittsylvania County has some great advantages. Chatham is the County Seat. County, State, and even some US government offices are close and convenient for Town citizens.

The following list includes some of the services and programs provided by county, state and federal government offices.

Pittsylvania County Emergency Management and Communications (Enhanced-911)
Located in a state of the art communications center in Chatham, this office serves the 61,000+ citizens of this county through Enhanced 911, and the dispatching of fire, rescue and police and other services to emergencies around the clock. the county seat. They take calls and dispatch for the Sheriff’s Office, Chatham, Gretna, and Hurt town Police Departments, 21 Fire Departments, 12 Rescue Squads, the Virginia Dept. of Forestry, a Search and Rescue group, and Animal Control. They also assist the State Game Wardens, ABC Agents and the Virginia State Police.

Pittsylvania County Circuit Court
The circuit court is the trial court with the broadest powers in Virginia. The circuit court handles all civil cases with claims of more than $15,000. It shares authority with the general district court to hear matters involving between $4,500 and $15,000. The circuit court has the authority to hear serious criminal cases called felonies.

Pittsylvania County Economic Development Office
PCED works to provide current and prospective businesses with information about living, working and running a business in Pittsylvania County. Information is available on transportation, taxes, utilities, employment, income and educational statistics for the County’s workforce. Prospective industry leaders can also browse an extensive database of the location, square footage or acreage, construction specifications, utilities, and proximity to transportation (such as highways or railroads) of available industrial buildings and sites.
Pittsylvania County General District Court
The general district court handles most traffic violations. The general district court also hears minor criminal cases known as misdemeanors and conducts preliminary hearings for more serious criminal cases called felonies. General district courts have exclusive authority to hear civil cases with claims of $4,500 or less and share authority with the circuit courts to hear cases with claims between $4,500 and $15,000. Examples of civil cases are landlord and tenant disputes, contract disputes and personal injury actions.

Pittsylvania County Jail
Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court
The juvenile and domestic relations district court hears all matters involving juveniles such as criminal or traffic matters. In addition, this court handles other matters involving the family such as custody, support and visitation. The court also hears family abuse cases, cases where adults have been accused of child abuse or neglect, and criminal cases where the defendant and alleged victim are family or household members.
